Specific Heat Related Numerical Example of Finding Temperature
An electric meter shows the consumption of one unit of electric energy, for heating 20kg of water. What would be the rise in temperature of water if the entire electrical energy is used only to heat the water and there are no energy losses. Specific heat of water = 4200 J/kg/oC.
Mass of the water heated = 20kg.
let the rise in temperature = toC
Sp. heat of water = 4200 J/kg/oC
Amount of energy given to water = 1 unit = 1kWh = 3600000J.
Applying Q = m x s x t
t = Q/m x s
Rise in temperature = 3600000/20 x 4200 = 3600/2 x 42
= 300/7 = 42.85oC.
